GreenEsteem – a new Horizon Europe project at the Faculty!

Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań has become the coordinator of a new international project entitled
Collaborative Knowledge Valorisation for Sustainable Nature-Based Solutions within the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, Horizon Europe.

The University will be represented by staff members from the Department of Integrated Geography, the Department of Regional and Local Studies, and the Critical Geography Research Unit. The project will be coordinated by Prof. Katarzyna Fagiewicz and Dr Lidia Poniżyfrom the Department of Integrated Geography.

The aim of the GreenEsteem project is to develop good practices in implementing nature-based solutions (NBS)
in urban areas. This will be achieved through pilot studies in two cities – Konin and Sofia.
Living labs will bring together civil society, academia, business and local authorities to co‑design NBS.

Based on the pilot results and strong expert support, a comprehensive training programme will be created.
The consortium includes organisations from Poland, Bulgaria, and Austria.
The total project budget is nearly €1 million.

The Department of Integrated Geography, in cooperation with the National Ecosystem Services Partnership Network and the Society for Urban Ecology – Central Europe Chapter, was pleased to invite participants to the 8th Scientific Symposium “Ecosystem Services in Transdisciplinary Approach” – ECOSERV 2025. The Symposium was held from September 18 to 20 2025, at the Faculty of Socio-Economic Geography and Spatial Management in Poznań. Since its first edition in 2010, the Symposium brought together a dedicated community of scientists, experts, and practitioners, creating an excellent platform for sharing experiences in the research and application of ecosystem services. We encouraged the submission of presentations and posters covering a wide range of topics related to ecosystems and their services, including:

    • Conditions and restoration of various ecosystems
    • Urban ecosystems
    • Mapping, assessment, and environmental–economic accounting
    • Data, methods, and models
    • Biodiversity

Staff members of the Department of Integrated Geography are participating in a new Horizon Europe programme entitled Science for Evidence-based and sustainabLe decIsions about NAtural capital (HORIZON-CL6-2021-BIODIV-01-07). The main objective of the project is to provide scientific information to support the protection, restoration, and sustainable climate‑neutral use of ecosystems in the EU by 2030. The key challenges of the project include examining the relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem services and integrating them into EU policy. The consortium brings together experts from all EU Member States, associated countries, EU overseas regions, as well as stakeholders from various public and business sectors. Leading experts from diverse scientific fields (ecologists, economists, sociologists) and from science-policy-business interfaces-previously involved in related initiatives (OpenNESS, ESMERALDA, MAIA, MAES, ESP, IPBES, BD Partnership) – are participating in the project. The total project budget is €13 million, and its implementation is planned for five years. More information on the project website https://project-selina.eu/
